Why Do Family Science

Families are essential in supporting their children’s positive science attitudes, interests, and aspirations. They may even have a bigger influence than school does.

You are your children’s primary role model for what kinds of play, exploration, and behavior are  appropriate.

Mirroring Curiosity

When you mirror your child’s curiosity and respond to their explorations with interest and enthusiasm, your child will hear the message that science is important and that they are capable of doing, thinking, and talking science.

This builds their confidence to ask questions, try things out, and make sense of what they see. These shared moments can help your child develop the mindset and habits of a curious, active learner.

Supporting Exploration

Children are naturally curious, and they may wonder how much freedom they have to explore at home. They might wonder:

  • Does my family invite me to help with chores or show me how to use their tools?

  • Do they listen to my ideas, even when they sound silly?

  • Is it okay to explore and make a mess while I’m learning?

When families answer these types of questions in an open and positive way, it creates a home where curiosity and discovery can thrive. Check out these videos of children exploring at home.

Curiosity in Action

In these videos children are exploring scientific questions:

  • How can I use a flashlight and an apple to make shadows?
  • What kind of noises can I make when I bounce balls on a pan?
  • Is this a worm I found outdoors, or something else?
